Furthering our commitment to excellence.

ECU Health nurses and nursing leaders gather together at the Magnet Nursing Conference.

Since 2013, ECU Health Medical Center has proudly held the prestigious Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This designation symbolizes our unwavering commitment to nursing excellence and the delivery of high-quality patient care.

But our journey doesn’t end there. To maintain this exceptional recognition, we’ve set forth on a path that demands dedication from every member of our team. It’s a journey marked by leadership, teamwork and the relentless pursuit of superior patient care outcomes. Our voyage toward Magnet re-designation involves: inter-professional collaboration, exceeding national benchmarks, shared decision making and professional development.

On June 1, 2023, we took another step forward in this incredible journey by submitting our Magnet re-designation application. This comprehensive submission, comprising 92 essays, showcases the dedication of our nurses to practicing with the core values of ECU Health: integrity, compassion, education, accountability, safety and teamwork.

Our journey is filled with remarkable stories, like the implementation of Chlorohexidine Gluconate (CHG) baths to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections or the “No Pass Zone” initiative on 2 East Family Medicine, which significantly decreased unassisted patient falls. We take pride in the culturally sensitive care provided by our nurses on 1 West and L&D, enabling a Spanish-speaking patient to achieve her wish to breastfeed her newborn. ECU Health Medical Center nurses make our system better and their commitment to continued learning brings expert care to the bedside for patients in eastern North Carolina. Thirty-one percent of eligible ECU Health Medical Center RNs hold specialty certification and 59 percent of Medical Center RNs have a Bachelor’s or higher degree in nursing.

And now, we invite you to join us in the excitement of our upcoming Magnet site visit in 2024. The success of this survey will result in our third Magnet designation, a reflection of our continuous journey towards nursing excellence and high-quality patient care. Together, we’re making a difference in the lives of those we serve.

More about Magnet

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)’s Magnet Recognition Program® identifies superior quality in nursing care by evaluating performance outcomes. Magnet® recognition is the highest national honor for nursing practice.

The ANCC evaluates organizations seeking both initial Magnet® recognition and recertification, judging how well organizations perform in the five foundations of the Magnet® Model, which correlate to global issues in nursing and health care.

In addition to excellent patient care, Magnet hospitals place emphasis on educational and professional development so our nursing workforce can continue to learn and grow within the organization and profession
