“Working at the hospital has changed me for the better. It has changed my perspective and outlook on life.”

To truly tell the story of ECU Health, you must look beyond the buildings and medical technologies. We are defined by people. We are a united team of incredible people providing incredible care – every day. We are the People of ECU Health.

Meet Taniqua Taylor, nursing assistant at ECU Health Medical Center. Taniqua is a recipient of the Petal Award — a homegrown award that acknowledges nursing assistants for outstanding patient care. She was nominated by her manager for the care she provided to a young patient that was at the end of life. Originally from Pennsylvania, Taniqua decided to pursue a career in health care to make an impact in the lives of others. She shares why working in health care has made her a better person.

“Working at the hospital has changed me for the better. It has changed my perspective and outlook on life. I’ve grown so much in my short tenure at the hospital. My job has taught me so much about patience and how to communicate better with patients and colleagues. I’ve learned how to work with different personalities and how to support my team. My experiences so far have been memorable. One of my fondest experiences was caring for a young patient who was very ill. I sat with her and read her a book. Although she was in pain, I could tell the reading was soothing to her. As I read to her, I held her hand and she transitioned. It was tough, but I did my best to gather myself and talk to the family. They were so appreciative. That experience will be with me forever.

If I could encourage other team members, I would say go the extra mile for your patients. It’s the little things that matter. It will certainly help you be a better person in life. I’ve decided I want to pursue nursing and become a neonatal nurse.”
