Access to the most advanced neurosurgical treatment approaches.
If you have a serious condition that requires brain and spine-related treatment, you want treatment backed by experience and excellent outcomes with cutting-edge technology. ECU Health neurosurgeons have expertise and fellowship training in a number of neurosurgery subspecialty areas. With a deeper knowledge of your specific condition or procedure, your provider is able to deliver more effective treatment.
Our multidisciplinary approach to neurosurgery means providers with different backgrounds and expertise all come together to create the best possible treatment plan for you. If surgery is your best treatment option, our physicians use the least invasive approach to treat your issue.
Back and spine pain concerns are some of the most frequent complaints patients have. Our Spine Care team brings together experts in neurosurgery, neurology, physical medicine and rehab, offering a multi-disciplinary approach in order to explore all options for your pain relief and recovery.
When surgery is unavoidable, we are here to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Our physicians utilize the least invasive approach possible resulting in less blood loss, less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery.

Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit
ECU Health Medical Center offers the only comprehensive neuroscience intensive care unit in eastern North Carolina. We’ve assembled a neuroscience team with advanced training, innovative techniques, and years of experience and expertise.
ECU Health’s Gamma Knife Icon™ is a non-invasive stereotactic radiosurgery instrument that involves no scalpel or incision. It uses precisely focused beams of radiation to treat malignant and benign brain tumors, as well as vascular and functional brain disorders, without harming surrounding healthy tissue. Gamma Knife radiosurgery may replace or supplement traditional surgery or whole brain radiation, depending on the patient’s diagnosis. Gamma Knife treatment offers several benefits over traditional surgery because it is painless and often an outpatient procedure, and it treats with pinpoint accuracy while preserving healthy tissue and adjusting for movement by the patient or tumor.
NeuroBlate technology allows the neurosurgeon to utilize an MRI-guided, high-intensity laser probe to destroy cancer cells deep within the brain. Through a pencil-size burr hole in the skull, neurosurgeons use real-time imaging to guide the probe into the tumor, where thermal energy is discharged to kill cancer cells. NeuroBlate offers hope for patients with brain tumors who have been given limited treatment options, including those whose tumors may be too risky to treat or did not respond to other treatments, or those who may not do well with open surgery. It is safe, less invasive than most minimally invasive surgery options, and offers faster recovery times after an overnight hospital stay.
GammaTile Therapy can give patients new hope in the fight against brain tumors. It can eliminate the need for traditional repeat radiation treatments so patients can focus on what matters most — healing. GammaTile is Surgically Targeted Radiation Therapy (STaRT) that is placed at the site of a recurrent brain tumor immediately after removal and starts fighting residual tumor cells right away. Over several weeks, it distributes radiation to tissue where the tumor was once growing while leaving healthy tissue undisturbed, and the collagen tile is naturally absorbed by the body. Patients are able to go on with everyday activities during this time. ECU Health Medical Center is the only GammaTile center in North Carolina and one of a limited number across the country.
For patients needing complex back surgery, the Mazor X Stealth™ Edition robot assists ECU Health’s Neurosurgeons with pre-operative and intra-operative planning. The robot helps assure physicians of optimal implant trajectories and 3D analytics. The Mazor X® system helps to reduce time in the operating room, ensure optimal surgical implant placement and represents the most advanced complex spine system available.
