What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses lifestyle interventions to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, Type 2 diabetes, and obesity. It is an evidence-based approach to preventing, treating and reversing diseases through healthy behaviors including healthy eating, exercise, managing stress, creating healthy relationships, getting adequate sleep and avoiding risky substances.

What to Expect

Our Wellness Navigator will help to assess your personal goals and connect you to your Lifestyle Medicine Care Team. You will have access to our Lifestyle Medicine and Functional Medicine Providers, dietitians, chefs, exercise physiologists, licensed clinical social workers and lifestyle coaches.

Your lifestyle medicine journey begins with a thorough health history. We look at where you are starting, and also where you would like to go! Your personal goals are important to us, and we will create your treatment plan based on those goals. We will utilize diagnostic testing to assess the underlying cause of your symptoms, or disease rather than just treating the symptoms that you are having.

Lifestyle changes have been shown to prevent, treat, manage, or even reverse, many medical conditions including diabetes and prediabetes, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, hormone imbalances, gastrointestinal issues, mild cognitive impairment, osteoarthritis, autoimmune issues, depression and more. The ECU Health Lifestyle Medicine program will help you make lasting changes that will help your body protect and heal itself.

Whether your goal is successful weight loss, managing a chronic disease, or simply the desire to make lifestyle changes that will prevent disease, our team is here for you! We offer a hands-on approach that will engage you in learning the tools needed for success. Our main Lifestyle Medicine clinic is located in the ECU Health Wellness Center – Greenville, and includes a teaching kitchen, a mind/body studio, massage rooms, classrooms, as well as access to the wellness center exercise space.

We know that lifestyle changes take time. Most of our patients engage in our program for three months or more. We also understand that behavior change can be difficult. That’s why we connect patients with experienced lifestyle coaches. Our trained team of professionals is here to walk with you on your wellness journey by helping to set your personal goals, determining your learning needs, addressing barriers, and providing you with accountability. Our group classes provide additional education and support.

Additional Treatment Plans

Obesity Medicine

Our Board Certified Obesity Medicine Provider specializes in the treatment of excessive body fat and obesity as well as management of chronic conditions. We take a thorough assessment to determine the underlying cause of your weight and health issues, and prescribe a treatment plan based on your individual goals. This plan may include weight loss medications when deemed appropriate.

Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and providers to work together to address underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. A diagnosis can be the result of more than one cause. We use biometric, laboratory testing, and lifestyle factors to create personalized health plans that include recommendations for diet, exercise, stress, sleep, mental health, disease risk reduction and more.
