Get prepared for your first day!
Welcome to ECU Health! This page is designed to guide you as you begin your journey as a remote ECU Health team member. Below, you’ll find information on Occupational Health pre-employment requirements, Form I-9, and benefits.
Remote work, also called virtual work, is when employees perform their job duties outside of a traditional office setting. Remote work can be fully remote, where the employees never go to the office, or hybrid. Hybrid work combines elements of both in-office and remote work, allowing flexibility in where and when employees work according to the schedule designated by leadership.
Meet some of ECU Health’s leadership team and hear their perspective on the values we share and the important work we do to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina.
Your Remote Welcome Day experience
You will receive a Welcome Day email the week before your start date with all the information needed for ECU Health Welcome Day. The Remote Welcome Day is a self-paced program designed to guide you in accessing all ECU Health systems and completing key modules essential to your role.
All ECU Health team members must review the Virtual Work Policy and fill out their Virtual Work Details in PeopleSoft. By completing your Virtual Work Details, you will designate your employment status as remote, hybrid, or onsite. If you need help with the Virtual Work Details, please contact HR Services at 252-816-7446.
Remote Team Member Pre-Employment Screening
Your employment with ECU Health is contingent on the timely and successful completion of all pre-employment requirements.
Remote pre-employment screenings will be scheduled at a Quest Diagnostic clinic near you. Details will be discussed during your initial call with your onboarding specialist, followed by direct contact from an Occupational Health nurse.
If you live near one of our Occupational Health clinics or planning a visit to the area prior to your start date, please notify your Onboarding Specialist so you can be scheduled at one of our local Occupational Health clinics. If your appointment is at one of our Occupational Health clinic locations, please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. Because of the availability of appointments, arriving late may require us to reschedule your appointment and potentially delay your start date. If you have an unexpected emergency, please contact the Occupational Health clinic at which you are scheduled and your onboarding specialist immediately. Changes to appointment date may result in a delay in your agreed upon start date.
Prior to your appointment, please read the following documents:
- Information about Worker’s Comp
- Acknowledgment regarding accidental injury

Frequently Asked Questions
The health and safety of our team members are important to us. This health review process helps ensure your ability to safely perform the essential job functions. Additionally, we ensure that all incoming employees are compliant with ECU Health, state and federal requirements, guidelines, and policies. The pre-employment health screening may include a drug screen, immunization or titers to test for immunity, health history review, vision screening, hearing screening, respiratory fit test, tuberculosis screening, discussions of accommodations, review of physical demands of your position and any other unit-specific screening. Additional exams may be completed at the request of our Occupational Health Medical Director.
Your privacy is our utmost concern. All health information is maintained confidentially by ECU Health Occupational Health and is not shared with management or your department. ECU Health Occupational Health only shares whether you are compliant with guidelines and safe to work with or without limitations.
Two MMR vaccines or positive titer, two varicella vaccines or positive titer, TDAP vaccine, documentation of HEP B vaccines (not required but offered to select health care workers), annual flu vaccine, and you may opt to provide COVID vaccination status but not required.
If you need official copies of immunization records, or if you need to update your personal records, there are several places you can locate records:
- If you are or have been employed in the health care field, start with your organization’s Occupational Health. They likely will have similar requirements to ECU Health. Since their database is confidential, vaccinations or blood tests may not appear in other immunization records.
- Check with your doctor or public health. Keep in mind, immunization records are maintained at a doctor’s office for a limited time. School data may include immunization records as well.
- Check with previous employers (including the military) that may have required immunizations.
- Ask parents or other caregivers if they have records of your childhood immunizations.
- Visit your closest health department and request your vaccine registry.
Candidates must provide proof of immunization which includes one of the following:
- A form showing the signature or stamp of a physician or their designee, or public health personnel that shows the month, day and year the vaccination dose or booster was administered.
- An official immunization record generated from a state or local health authority or school that shows the month, day and year the vaccination or booster dose was administered.
- A document which provides titer test
- Your identifying information (name, date of birth, etc.) must be visible on the document.
If you can’t find your personal records or records from your doctor, you may need to get vaccinated again. While this is not ideal, it is safe to repeat vaccines. Another option is to have blood drawn to check for immunity. These blood tests are called immunity titers and can be drawn for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella (Chickenpox). These can be performed free of charge at your in-person appointment with ECU Health Occupational Health.
Some prescription medications can cause you to have a positive urine drug screening result. We require that you produce a copy of your current prescription for the medication detected on the drug screen. This result will be reviewed by a Medical Review Officer to determine if your prescription medication was the reason for the positive test result, in which case your drug screen result will be negative.
*Please note, the drug screen will test for marijuana, which is not a legal substance in the state of North Carolina.
The ECU Health Medical Review Officer (MRO) may request a repeat of a drug screen at their discretion. The screening may be observed, if requested.
- Respond promptly to phone calls and e-mails.
- Research and bring your immunization records to your scheduled appointment.
- ECU Health has a 20/40 minimum standard for vision for most positions. Failure to meet this requirement may delay your start date.

- Additional medical clearance may be needed if there are concerns of your ability to meet the essential functions of the job with or without an accommodation. ECU Health Occupational Health may require a functional capacity evaluation, follow-up with the Occupational Health Medical Director or a review of previous medical records. To ensure your safety, please provide requested records so we may move through the medical clearance process as quickly as possible.

- Annual Flu Vaccine
- Respiratory Fit Testing
- Physical Demands Analysis Review
